The New York Yankees come into the offseason with a clear need to acquire a starting pitcher during the offseason. Neither Gerrit Cole nor Carlos Rodon will be ready for the start of the 2026 season as they rehab from surgeries.
Cole will be coming back from Tommy John surgery, and Rodon had surgery to help remove a bone spur and loose bodies from his elbow back in October.
So far, the Yankees have been linked to plenty of frontline starting pitchers on the open market. However, you cannot overlook the trade market, especially with some of the names that have been dangled thus far.
Former GM predicts the Yankees to land Freddy Peralta in a trade with the Brewers
One name that has been dangled as a trade chip this offseason has been Milwaukee Brewers' pitcher Freddy Peralta. Peralta will become a free agent after the 2026 season, and Milwaukee is looking to see the value he could bring to the team instead of letting him walk for nothing next year.
With that in mind, the Yankees have the tools to make a trade happen here. Former MLB GM Jim Bowden predicts this deal could get done if the Bronx bombers send Will Warren and Jose Caballero Milwaukee's way.
"Peralta helps the Yankees weather the beginning of the season while some of their returning starters recover from surgeries, and then gives them a dangerous arm down the stretch to pair with Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and others. The Brewers get a young, controllable starter and a shortstop who can give them better offensive production than they received from Joey Ortiz in 2025."
Bowden believes the deal makes sense for both teams. The Yankees get a frontline starter to hold things down to start the year, and the Brewers get a controllable starting pitcher and a shortstop upgrade.
