Could the Yankees pull off a trade for the Reds' Hunter Greene? image

Recent reports from The Athletic's Brendan Kuty suggest that league sources believe the New York Yankees have interest in Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene.

The Yankees will have a formidable rotation when Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon return from the injured list, but they could make it MLB's best with the addition of Greene, who had a 2.76 ERA with 132 strikeouts in 107.2 innings in 2025.

In a trade proposal, Drew Koch of the Blog Red Machine sends Greene and right-hander Lyon Richardson to the Yankees in exchange for Jasson Dominguez and Will Warren, as well as prospects Carlos Lagrange and Dax Kilby.

"Both Dominguez and Warren are on the Major League roster, but the Reds will still need the Yankees to sweeten the pot even more. Yankees pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange stands 6-foot-7 and has an electric fastball," wrote Koch.

"Though he comes with some reliever risk, his heater sits in the upper 90s, and he pairs it with an above-average slider. Lagrange reached Double-A last season and should be on track to make it to the big leagues by 2027 — maybe sooner."

What adding Greene could mean for Yankees

Departing from shortstop prospect Dax Kilby might be hard for the Yankees. The 19-year-old is a left-handed hitter with a slick glove who may wind up being a 20-20 type Major League talent.

But Kilby is still a few years away from an MLB promotion, and the Yankees need all that talent they can get before Aaron Judge's career ends. Greene finished eighth in NL Cy Young voting in 2024 and routinely throws over 100 mph with his fastball.

Last year, Greene struck out hitters at a 31.4 percent clip while keeping his walk rate at a minuscule 6.2 percent. He has three years remaining on his contract with the Reds, with a $21 million 2029 club option.
