Aaron Boone’s latest comments spell very bad news for Yankees in MLB free agency image

If this were 20 years ago, the New York Yankees would be walking out of this offseason with at least three of Cody Bellinger, Kyle Tucker, Tatsuya Imai, and Ketel Marte.

However, this is 2025, almost 2026, and the Yankees have shown over the past few years that they are no longer willing to spend the way they once did.

After losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series, it would make plenty of sense for the Yankees to go out and improve the roster.

Despite that reality, it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen.

Aaron Boone, for whatever reason, believes the Yankees are just as good as Toronto, despite the postseason saying otherwise.

“We have the exact same record,” Boone said, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. “But they obviously were a great team last year, an eyelash away from winning the world championship.”

Perhaps more notable than Boone’s comments about the Blue Jays were his remarks about the current state of the Yankees' roster.

He acknowledged they will try to improve, but also doubled down on the idea that the team is already very good as constructed.

“You’re always trying to improve your club and improve your team,” Boone said, “but also pause and say, ‘Hey, we’re pretty good here.’ And we’ve got a lot of really good players and a lot of really good young core players that emerged on different levels last year that we need to continue to grow in their big-league kind of journey.”

From that comment alone, it doesn’t feel like the Yankees are going to do what’s necessary to truly elevate this roster, something they absolutely need to do if they want to be the team they want to be.
