Anthony Volpe has struggled mightily for the New York Yankees this season. Many Yankees fans have called for his replacement, and manager Aaron Boone may finally be considering a change at the shortstop position.
In a recent interview with Talkin’ Yanks before the team’s home series against the Detroit Tigers, Boone shared that he has considered making a change at shortstop given Volpe’s struggles, more specifically giving Jose Caballero more playing time.
“Maybe, I think about it everyday,” Boone said. “But, I also love the flexibility Caballero gives you off the bench too.”
“Still hoping that Anthony’s best is still in front of him,” Boone added. “It’s obviously been a tough stretch, started to get some traction going, but yeah, we want to get him going offensively.”
Volpe has struggled tremendously in all aspects of the game this season, slashing .207/.269/.396 with 19 home runs and 70 RBI’s. Additionally, Volpe leads the American League with 19 errors.
Caballero was traded to the Yankees at the trade deadline, and has been impressive when given playing time. He’s slashing .233/.346/.419 and is 9 for 10 on stolen bases since joining the Yankees. Caballero also provides more versatility, and can wreak havoc on the basepaths which the Yankees have desperately missed this season.
Nonetheless, the Yankees will need to get their shortstop situation sorted out soon. With less than a month remaining in the regular season, the Yankees need Volpe to figure it out soon heading into the playoffs. The team currently holds the first Wild Card spot in the AL, and is still in the mix for the AL East division crown.
