The New York Mets could be eyeing a buy-low starter on the open market, as reports continue to indicate that they are interested in Zac Gallen.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Gallen is a potential option for the Mets, especially coming off what was viewed around the league as a down year.

“Zac Gallen might be a bargain off his uncharacteristically poor season, and the New Jersey product is a potential fit, though he’d cost a draft choice due to his qualifying offer,” Heyman wrote. “Lucas Giolito, surprisingly not offered the QO, is another nice option.”

Gallen has a track record that should outweigh last season's results and was once viewed as one of the better starters in the game. The idea of capitalizing on a down year is exactly the type of move New York appears open to making, and it makes plenty of sense for most teams.

The qualifying offer matters, though. Adding Gallen would mean surrendering a draft pick, something the Mets and other teams have been more mindful of in recent years.

As a New Jersey product, Gallen would be pitching close to home, which is always a good thing, too.

Heyman also mentioned Lucas Giolito, which shows the type of arms New York is exploring, although Gallen is better.
