The New York Mets are one of the teams that have shown a willingness to spend in free agency to field a playoff-caliber team. However, that mindset did not quite work out for the team from Queens as they missed the MLB playoffs altogether this season after spending close to a billion dollars last offseason.
The free agency period opens in early November, and the Mets are already being linked to Japanese phenom Munetaka Murakami, who is expected to be posted this Winter and be able to sign with any MLB club.
Mets are named as 'best fit' for Munetaka Murakami
Munetaka Murakami has become known as one of the premier power bats in Japan over the past few seasons, and now it's time for him to embark on MLB.
In a recent FanSided piece, Munetaka Murakami is named as a 'best fit' for the New York Mets, who are probably eager to spend once again this Winter:
"There is going to be big interest in Murakami, 26, and teams will be lining up for the chance to sign a player with outstanding power. Yes, there are questions – like how will he adjust to major-league pitching – but he’s going to do very well in free agency."
Murakami has 265 home runs in eight seasons in Japan (all with the Yakult Swallows), including 56 home runs in 2022.
The Japanese star Murakami can play either third base or first, which the Mets may need to replace Pete Alonso's production at first if he walks in free agency.
