The New York Mets are going into the offseason with one key decision: what to do with superstar slugger Pete Alonso. He’s opted out of his contract, and now the Mets need to decide if it’s worth bringing him back.
Now, New York knows where Alonso stands, as he has revealed the contract he wants. According to the New York Post’s Mike Puma, the Mets superstar is looking for a contract of at least seven years.
“Alonso, who turns 31 in December, is expected to seek a contract of at least seven years — a length consistent with deals the player’s agent, Scott Boras, completed in recent seasons for Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman at the same age (Chapman received a six-year extension from the Giants after his first season with the club on a different contract),” Puma wrote.
Puma continued, stating that Alonso is expected to become a DH at some point in his next contract, and used Toronto Blue Jays superstar slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as a contract comparison for Alonso.
“Guerrero, who will turn 27 before next season, last spring received a 14-year contract worth $500 million from the Blue Jays. In three of the past four seasons, Alonso posted a better OPS than the Toronto slugger. Guerrero’s defensive metrics, in terms of range and arm strength are also subpar, albeit not as low as Alonso’s,” Puma noted.
While Alonso has not outright stated the number he wants, one can assume he will expect half of Guerrero's contract: a seven-year, $250 million deal. If the Mets are ready to shell out for the Polar Bear, they'd better get on it soon; otherwise, another contender will gladly pay for his services.
