There are two massive sluggers entered into free agency from the NL East.

The New York Mets have seen Pete Alonso hit the open market. And from the Philadelphia Phillies, Kyle Schwarber is a free agent.

What if the Mets chose to replace Alonso with Schwarber?

That's what MLB.com's Manny Randhawa suggests in a new article.

It isn't a perfect swap, since Alonso played first base and Schwarber would just become the Mets' full-time DH. But in terms of slugging, it could work.

It would also deal a mighty blow to the Phillies, who would love to get Schwarber back.

"It would be a tremendous coup for the Mets to not only add a massive left-handed bat to the lineup but also to poach him, so to speak, from the division-rival Phillies," Randhawa writes. "Schwarber will be going into his age-33 campaign in 2026, and he’s coming off a career year in which he smashed an NL-leading 56 home runs (including four in a single game) and drove in a Major League-best 132 runs. If stalwart first baseman Pete Alonso leaves in free agency, Schwarber -- who, like Alonso, played in 162 games last season -- would be a worthy replacement in the Mets’ lineup."

The Phillies would seem unlikely to do the reverse swap. They've already got Bryce Harper at first base. Although considering Alonso isn't a great defender, he could just take over the DH spot in their lineup.

Mets owner Steve Cohen isn't shy about spending money. With a lot of home runs out there to be signed, it seems likely the Mets will add someone. At this point, it's just a question of whether it's Alonso, or Schwarber, or someone else altogether.
