The New York Mets had one of the worst finishes in MLB history to close out the 2025 season. Their collapse was so severe that they went from being the best team in baseball to not even making the playoffs. Many saw this as the Mets’ downfall, and even MLB insider Jeff Passan labeled it a disintegration.

“The New York Mets, losers of six straight, are down 6-0 and facing Jacob deGrom. Since starting 45-24 and owning the best record in MLB, the Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins and Nationals. This isn't a collapse. It's a disintegration,” Passan posted.

The offseason initially looked bleak as well, but the Mets were able to turn things around last week. First came the signing of Bo Bichette, then the trade for Luis Robert Jr., and to top it off, they acquired the pitcher they had been seeking.

“The New York Mets' winterlong pursuit of a front-line starting pitcher ended late Wednesday when they acquired All-Star Freddy Peralta, as well as fellow right-hander Tobias Myers, from the Milwaukee Brewers for Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, two of their top prospects,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.

Even with Peralta in the fold, the Mets could still add another starter. FanSided’s Christopher Kline believes Zac Gallen could be the perfect fit.

“The New York Mets need some stability in their rotation, and Zac Gallen is trending toward a manageable short-term deal. He bombed last season in Arizona, but finished strong enough, and he's only a couple years removed from Cy Young contention. For a team in desperate need of veteran arms — or depth in general — Gallen feels like a nice cherry on top of a transformative offseason,” Kline wrote.

Gallen would bring a solid, team-friendly arm to a rotation that has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. While this wouldn’t be a blockbuster move by numbers alone, adding him would be a major boost for the organization. A strong rotation to support their powerful lineup would be the icing on the cake.
