The New York Mets are facing a big problem if their superstar slugger, Pete Alonso, signs with another team this offseason. They need someone to replicate his production, and luckily, there may be one player.
Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes that Los Angeles Angels three-time MVP Mike Trout could be their answer. He would make a superstar outfield with Juan Soto, and as he gets older, he can transition to DH.
“Steve Cohen is the richest owner in baseball and puts the New York Mets in these conversations almost without fail. Trout can slide right into the DH role while also giving New York much-needed outfield depth. It's a tremendous fit on paper, especially if Pete Alonso leaves. The Mets need someone to protect Juan Soto in the lineup.” Kline wrote.
This past season, Trout slashed.232/.359/.439/.797 with 14 doubles, 26 home runs, and 64 RBI in 130 games played. With a team that routinely gets on base, Trout can pump those RBI up.
The only problem with this is that Soto might need to move to DH at some point as well. He’s a very poor defender, and DH seems like the logical move. However, with half a decade left on Trout’s contract, they would have to be ok with him staying in the outfield, or keep Trout in the outfield until he's 38 years old.
Overall, this would be a good move by the Mets. Trout will definitely protect Soto, and he gets a chance at winning a championship. Hopefully, the Mets realize this and start trying to make a deal.
