The New York Mets thought they had the World Series in the bag this year, until they crashed and burned. Now, with the potential departure of Pete Alonso, they need to find a possible replacement.
Fansided’s Chris Landers believes that there’s a replacement that can kill two birds with one stone for the Mets: two-time World Series MVP Corey Seager. Seager would replace the star power of Alonso, but would also upgrade the shortstop position, currently held by Jeff McNeil.
“But New York needs another infielder at either second or third to go along with Brett Baty, as Jeff McNeil is no longer cutting it. Or, heck, Baty could even be the Mets' Pete Alonso replacement at first base. Again: The fit isn't squeaky clean, and this would be a decidedly un-David Stearns thing to do. Still, if Seager didn't put the Yankees on his no-trade list, he probably didn't put the Mets either — unless he just really has a grudge against the National League — and you can never count Steve Cohen out of situations like this,” Landers wrote.
This past season, Seager slashed.271/.373/.487/.860 with 19 doubles, 21 home runs, and 50 RBI in 102 games played. His bat would be a nice upgrade over McNeil’s, and his defense is much better than Alonso’s.
Landers does have a point, though, as Cohen isn’t really the type to make blockbuster trades. If he needs to replace Alonso, he’d probably do it through free agency.
However, the Mets shouldn’t be counted out because of it. If they’re smart, they’ll plan a proposal just in case they need it.
