The New York Mets are on a roll in the player market. It began with the signing of Bo Bichette in free agency, followed by the acquisition of Luis Robert Jr., and was capped off by trading for Freddy Peralta. All of this comes after the Mets endured a brutal finish to the 2025 season.

“The New York Mets, losers of six straight, are down 6-0 and facing Jacob deGrom. Since starting 45-24 and owning the best record in MLB, the Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins and Nationals. This isn't a collapse. It's a disintegration,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan posted.

The most surprising move was the trade for Robert Jr. While there had been trade talks last season, there were no reports suggesting the Mets and Chicago White Sox were actively in discussions.

“The New York Mets acquired center fielder Luis Robert Jr. In a trade with the Chicago White Sox late Tuesday, adding a strong defensive presence with a high-upside offensive game as they reshape their roster after a disappointing 2025,” Passan wrote.

The good news for the Mets is that Robert fits nicely within the organization. The bad news—and the biggest concern—is his ability to stay healthy. The Mets are hoping he doesn’t battle the injury issues that plagued him in Chicago.

“Luis Robert, a perfect fit for the New York Mets. Fantastic defensive CF with lots of power and offensive upside. Could we see a Vaughn like offensive bounce-back now after leaving the White Sox? It also moves Benge to the spot he’s best at, LF. Must hope Luis stays healthy now.” MLB reporter Michael Marino wrote.

Robert has struggled to remain on the field throughout his career, which is also an issue the Mets have faced with several players in recent years. If they can keep him healthy for a full season, New York looks increasingly dangerous.

With Robert alongside Juan Soto, Bo Bichette, and several other stars, the Mets’ lineup has the potential to wreak havoc. However, Robert’s health will remain the central concern—if it isn’t managed carefully, the trade could ultimately prove to be a wasted opportunity.
