The New York Mets probably feel like they need to make a splash.
After a brutal collapse to miss the playoffs in 2025, there's no time to waste in moving back up the standings in 2026.
That's why they've been such a popular piece of the offseason rumor mill in both trade discussions and free agency links.
And one big name keeps coming up: Tarik Skubal, the ace left-handed pitcher for the Detroit Tigers.

MLB.com's Jim Callis wrote some new thoughts, through a prospect lens, about the Mets' pursuit of Skubal. And in his Wednesday blurb, Callis laid out both good news and bad news for Mets fans.
"I don't think the Tigers are going to trade Tarik Skubal this offseason. But I do feel like if they traded him, the team that would be first in line would be the Mets," Callis writes. "I think they are the most desperate, coming off their season, they have the resources to pay Skubal whatever they wanted, and they have prospects to trade. I don't think they'll trade Nolan McLean (No. 1/MLB No. 11). I do wonder if they would part with Jonah Tong (No. 4/MLB No. 46), who was the best pitcher in the Minors last year but not as effective in the Majors at age 22? Brandon Sproat (No. 5)? Carson Benge (No. 2/MLB No. 21) might be a tough chip. But they also have Jett Williams (No. 3/MLB No. 30). They could keep one and trade one. They have Jacob Reimer (No. 6), who is one of the top third base prospects in baseball. This is a team that is very much in it to win it, they have assets, and they are highly motivated to make a trade."

At this point if you're the Mets, you'll take the idea of being the team most likely to get Skubal. A trade like that is never easy, and so all a team can do is put itself in the best position to have a chance.
The Mets' farm system puts them in position. They just have to find a way to get the trade over the line.
