The New York Mets finished the first half of the 2025 season at 55-42, just a half-game back in the National League East. They currently have control of the second NL Wild Card spot.

Now, the second half of the season is upon us, and the Mets are looking like a clear contender this year. This means that they will likely be buyers at the upcoming July 31 trade deadline.

They need a little bit of help in their bullpen. Having an elite arm to go next to Edwin Diaz would be a plus.

Sam Blum of The Athletic predicts that the Washington Nationals will trade closer Kyle Finnegan to a division rival and listed the Mets as a possible fit.

"Finnegan has been good, and two division rivals can use some help, namely the Phillies and Mets. Philly’s Dave Dombrowski is known to be willing to trade prospects at the deadline. And while New York’s David Stearns is the opposite, his team’s glaring bullpen needs might force him to be more aggressive," Blum wrote.

Finnegan is 1-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 35 appearances with Washington and has racked up 18 saves. He's on an expiring deal and the Nationals are well out of contention.

The Mets will likely have to give up some top prospects. As if often the case at trade deadlines, rental pitching, especially relief help comes at a high cost.

Trades within the same division are also exceptionally rare, but never impossible, and New York could use some help.

Having Finnegan working alongside Diaz would give the Mets a deadly combination at the back end of their bullpen, and it could help them potentially overtake the Phillies in the NL East.

We'll see if the Mets decide to make a play for the former All-Star.
