If the past few months have shown the New York Mets anything, it's that they can't expect to spend money and have an excellent team. That's the unfortunate reality of Major League Baseball, and something that ultimately Steve Cohen and David Stearns will have to figure out.

It's evident that the Mets have a decent team, and one could even make an argument that if things go as well as possible over the next few weeks, they can be excellent when it matters most, but it's still something the team has to figure out.

That doesn't, however, mean that the Mets shouldn't continue to spend on some of the top players available.

Will the Mets add a new third baseman?

As the Mets enter the offseason, they’ll have multiple names to pursue, including star third baseman Alex Bregman. The Mets could use some help at the hot corner, and Zach Pressnell of Sports Illustrated believes he's one of four players they should consider due to their need.

“The Mets need to add corner infielders to their roster, and there's no better corner infielder on the market than Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman.

“The Mets were reportedly interested in Bregman last winter, but opted to re-sign Alonso instead. With Vientos struggling this season, the Mets could go after Bregman again, opting to replace Vientos with the Red Sox's superstar. The Mets could also add Bregman alongside Vientos and Alonso, opting to move one of the three to designated hitter,” he wrote.

MOREMets' Juan Soto is first in MLB history with this home run trifecta record

Throughout the 2025 campaign, Bregman dealt with an injury, but he was largely a big success for the Boston Red Sox. He's hitting /273 with 17 home runs.

Adding that, even if the production slows down a bit as he ages, would be a massive win for the Mets.
