The New York Mets had a miserable finish to the 2025 MLB season.
They appeared poised to secure an NL Wild Card berth right up until the final week. However, their season concluded with a significant downturn, leaving them out of contention.
With Steve Cohen's financial backing, the Mets possess considerable talent and the capacity to acquire additional high-profile free agents.
But they might also need a change in energy. That's what MLB.com's Will Leitch thinks.
In a recent article, Leitch proposed that the Mets reacquire Jose Iglesias following his year-long absence, noting his significant role in the team's 2024 performance.
"You know what the Mets could really use after that late-season collapse? Good vibes," Leitch writes. "Who better to return to Citi Field, then, than Iglesias, the unofficial Vibe Captain of the 2024 team, Mr. OMG himself? Iglesias, somewhat improbably, had the best year of his career in '24, and while it didn’t go well for him in San Diego this past season, well, maybe there was just something about New York that worked for him. The Mets aren’t exactly short on infielders, but Iglesias wouldn’t cost much, and if it didn’t work out for him on the field, what better way to start off a coaching career than letting him hang around with the team -- and the fanbase -- that appreciated him the most?"
While Iglesias isn't known for his power, he's an exceptional defender at shortstop. The Mets wouldn't require him to play frequently, as Francisco Lindor already occupies that position.
But in the clubhouse and in a limited role, Iglesias could still be useful.
Should he genuinely alter the Mets' atmosphere, it would represent a valuable acquisition regardless of the cost.
