Mets get good news on re-signing Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz in free agency image

The New York Mets have two major players who could potentially depart this offseason in free agency.

Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz are both on the open market and could depart if they choose.

The Mets, on paper, wouldn't want to lose either guy.

Alonso is the franchise's all-time home runs leader.

Diaz is one of the best closers in baseball.

The Mets could also use some help in the outfield from free agency, too.

So on Monday, MLB.com's Anthony DiComo's latest report is a good sign. This is what DiComo wrote on X:

Asked if re-signing Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz AND acquiring top-flight outfielder is realistic for the Mets, David Stearns replied: "Sure." He added that Steve Cohen remains committed to spending what's necessary. "I think anything would be realistic right now," Stearns said.

It's definitely true that the Mets' owner Cohen doesn't seem shy about spending money.

Bringing back Alonso and Diaz likely comes down more to how the Mets value certain player types.

Alonso, for example, isn't a great defender at first base. He may be trending toward being just a DH. How much is that worth to the Mets?

And Diaz, as a closer, isn't at one of the game's more valuable positions on paper, either.

If the Mets felt they could use their money elsewhere to upgrade more efficiently, they probably would.

But there's also a strong sentimental pull to bringing back one or both of Alonso and Diaz, and that appears to be in play, too.
