Mets get Christmas update on Cody Bellinger's free agency image

The New York Mets wouldn't have to get Cody Bellinger to come far.

The free agent from the New York Yankees is one of the best names still on the open market, and the Mets have been linked to Bellinger in a variety of places.

In an article published on MLB.com on Christmas Eve, that link came again.

Their writer, Andrew Simon, calls Bellinger "the right puzzle piece" for the Mets in free agency.

"It’s not hard to see Bellinger heading back to the Yankees or even returning to the Dodgers," Simon writes. "But his particular set of skills feels like an ideal match for a Mets roster that has shed three cornerstones in Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo. Bellinger would give New York coverage at three positions where they now have some question marks: center field, left field and first base. He would also add another strong bat to the lineup while helping the Mets’ goal of fortifying a defense that was decidedly below average in 2025. Taking another key player away from the Yankees probably wouldn’t be a bad bonus, either."

Bellinger would most pertinently answer the Mets' question mark in centerfield.

They spent the whole 2025 season trying to figure out that position to no avail.

The free agent pool at CF is basically Bellinger and no one else, so that puts him in a powerful position in negotiations.

Bellinger proved he was a great fit in the Bronx.

How about Queens? We may get to find out.
