Mets free agency rumor involves overpowered Edwin Diaz, Devin Williams plan from ESPN's Jeff Passan image

The New York Mets have a chance to flex their financial muscle.

Don't put it past owner Steve Cohen to do that yet again this offseason.

ESPN's Jeff Passan broke down the free agent closer market in a new article on Tuesday. Two of the top closers available are Mets star Edwin Diaz, along with former Yankees closer Devin Williams.

Passan expects the Mets to be in on at least one, but then he floats another thought: Why not both?

This is what Passan wrote:

"New York is in on Devin Williams, whose connections to those in the Mets organization, including president of baseball operations David Stearns, date to their time together with the Brewers. Williams is coming off the worst season of his career with the Yankees, but his peripheral numbers were excellent and his stuff still graded out well-above-average. Williams has suitors from coast to coast, though the Mets are mulling the opportunity to sign Díaz and Williams to head up a bullpen in need of a total restructuring."

That would be one way to fix a bullpen in a hurry.

The Mets are letting trade deadline acquisition Ryan Helsley walk, so Williams would in essence replace him.

Williams wasn't as good in 2025 with the Yanks as he'd been previously with the Brewers, but a lot of his underlying metrics were still solid, and the Mets would likely be getting a really good reliever.

The Mets could have Williams close if they got him and not Diaz. But sure, why not go after both? They've got the bandwidth to do it, and it'd create quite the powerful back end of the bullpen in Queens.
