Mets' David Stearns urged to improve lackluster rotation, outfield depth image

The New York Mets are making a lot of changes this offseason, and have been doing so by letting players walk, bringing in free agents, and swinging aggressive trades.

David Stearns has been very active this winter, and while they've not landed a top free agent like Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, Framber Valdez, or Ranger Suarez yet, they still could use those kinds of players this winter.

And for ESPN's Jeff Passan, the goal is clear for the Mets. He is urging them to continue to add to their starting rotation and their outfield amid lackluster depth at both spots. Whether it's a top name or just extra depth, Stearns still has some work to do.

Mets urged to improve SP, OF depth with offseason moves

"They are sorely lacking outfield and starting pitching depth, though, so whether it's a run at Tucker, a deal for Valdez to be the Opening Day starter they need, or both, president of baseball operations David Stearns has work to do."

The Mets cannot go into 2026 with their current roster. Work still needs to be done. Another arm, ideally one atop the rotation, would be ideal. Also, the Mets adding another outfielder, especially if it's Tucker, would also be ideal.

They've reportedly offered a ridiculous $50 million -er-year deal to Tucker, and while he's likely to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays on a long-term deal, their high AAV offer is enticing enough to keep them in the race for Tucker.

Marcus Semien, Jorge Polanco, Devin Williams, and Luke Weaver are solid additions, but the outfield and rotation are still lacking.

Nolan McLean, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Brandon Sproat, Sean Manaea, and Jonah Tong make up a decent rotation, but a veteran starter who can top the rotation would be the best move they could make.

Valdez, as Passan alluded to, makes the most sense. While Suarez would be fun, from the perspective of stealing him from the Philadelphia Phillies, there is more uncertainty with his health than there is with Valdez.

Regardless of who it ends up being, the Mets need to add two positions this winter: an outfielder and a starting pitcher.

Ideally, for the Mets, those additions would come in the form of top players at their positions this winter, but even if it's a depth signing or trade, it would still be worth it for the Mets amid a clear need at both spots.
