The New York Mets are still pushing for an NL East title, but will have to get through one of the best teams in the league, the Philadelphia Phillies, to do so.

New York currently sits 5.5 games behind the Phillies entering Thursday, but they are still sitting with a spot in the playoffs as the final NL Wild Card team to make it.

Manager Carlos Mendoza and the team are still planning on October baseball, and on Thursday, they added a veteran pitcher who's found success in the postseason.

Mets claim bullpen pitcher Wander Suero from waivers

Before finishing off a series against the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Mets claimed right-handed relief pitcher Wander Suero off waivers from the Atlanta Braves, the team announced on X.

Suero, turning 34 later this month, has struggled in the small number of opportunities he's had in 2025 with the Braves. In five appearances, he has a 11.37 ERA, 2.21 WHIP, and seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

New York is hoping that Suero could be an option come postseason time. He played a role in the Washington Nationals' pursuit of the World Series title in 2019. Although he hasn't found much success since 2020, when he finished with a 3.80 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP, the Mets will see if the veteran can bring some help into the bullpen.

After the Mets promoted prospect Brandon Sproat to the 40-man roster earlier today, they will have to clear room for Suero. Until then, he'll report to the minor leagues.
