Mets catcher makes boneheaded mistake with mask to let Braves score a run image

Luis Torrens will want this moment back.

The New York Mets catcher gifted the Atlanta Braves a run with a play you don't see very often.

Atlanta had runners on second and third when a ball in the dirt trickled away from Torrens. He ran over toward the baseball with his catcher's mask in his hand, and he reached down to stop the ball with his mask.

As soon as the ball and held mask made contact, the play was dead. The mask is considered "detached equipment," which means touching the baseball with it ends the play and awards each runner a base.

Since the Braves had a runner on third, this violation resulted in a second Atlanta run in the first inning and a 2-0 lead.

The Braves already had one run on the board thanks to Ronald Acuna's first pitch home run. But that's much more excusable. He's one of the best hitters on the planet.

Atlanta may have gotten the ensuing runners home anyway, but to allow one in like this hurts that much more.

One thing is for sure: Torrens will never make this mistake again.
