Mets add former top-100 prospect to depth chart while cutting ties with LHP image

The New York Mets saw a chance to add an intriguing player, and they got rid of a pitcher to do it.

The tandem moves came Wednesday, announced by the team.

The Mets have claimed catcher Drew Romo off waivers from the Orioles. They designated left-handed pitcher Brandon Waddell for assignment.

This adds Romo to the 40-man roster while removing Waddell, who will now be exposed to waivers.

The Orioles had only picked up Romo earlier this offseason from the Rockies, but didn't have the space to keep him around.

Romo is still just 24 years old and was the No. 35 overall pick by the Colorado Rockies in the 2020 draft.

At one point, Romo was a top-100 prospect, thanks in large part to his defensive abilities at catcher.

Romo has gotten 56 MLB plate appearances, all with Colorado, and hit.167 in that stint.

In Triple-A, Romo is a.286 hitter over three seasons. In the 2025 season, he had an OPS of.738.

Romo should provide solid catching depth, especially because he has multiple minor-league options remaining, allowing him to be shuttled up and down from Triple-A Syracuse a few times.

The Mets' top catcher remains Francisco Alvarez, and they have Luis Torrens and Hayden Senger, too.

The Mets gave up Waddell after a 3.45 ERA in 31.1 MLB innings this season that didn't include very impressive strikeout or walk rates.
