The New York Mets are likely to lose their franchise star and all-time home run leader, Pete Alonso. Alonso has been a cornerstone of the team for several years. However, throughout the season, his comments about his future were less than reassuring.
“But again, we'll see what happens. I love it, it's great, but you can't really predict anything. And for me... I am focused on trying to put this thing across the finish line. I haven't really thought about the free agent thing until we're talking about it right now,” Alonso said. “It would be great to stay. But, again, whatever happens, happens. I can't get a crystal ball. I wish I could, but we'll see.”
If the Mets lose Alonso, they will need to replace his bat. A strong candidate for that is Alex Bregman, who is unlikely to demand as hefty a contract as Alonso.
“Both Alex Speier of The Boston Globe and Tyler Milliken of WEEI suggested Matt Chapman's contract as a comparison to what Bregman could get. The third baseman signed a bridge deal with the San Francisco Giants in 2024, posted a rebound season, then signed a six-year, $151 million extension,” BoSox Injection’s Katie Manganelli wrote.
CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder believes the Mets are ready to go all-in on Bregman.
“I like the Mets here. It seems that Pete Alonso is out the door and Bregman helps alleviate some of that loss offensively while also improving the defense by taking over at third and kicking Mark Vientos to first base. Yes, I still have hope for Vientos to be more 2024 than 2025 and having to concentrate less on defense (yes, first base is important, but it's so much less stressful than third base) will help matters there,” Snyder wrote.
Adding Bregman to the Mets would be a major boost, but it also signals the end of the line for Brett Baty. The team is expected to be active in the market for a third baseman this offseason.
Bringing in Bregman would be huge for the Mets, and his World Series experience adds even more value. It will be interesting to see how the team handles Baty moving forward.
