Marlins trading Sandy Alcantara plan has changed, writes MLB insider image

Sandy Alcantara was a very popular trade name throughout the 2025 MLB season.

The Miami Marlins never dealt him, though.

Now that the offseason has arrived, it could be another chance for the Marlins to trade the big right-handed pitcher and former Cy Young winner.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale expects a different sense of urgency with Alcantara this offseason.

"The Marlins never got the offer they wanted to move their former Cy Young winner, but this winter, are set to accept the best offer they receive, believing now is the time," Nightengale writes. "He earns $17.3 million in 2026 with a $21 million club option in 2027."

Alcantara hasn't been the same pitcher since Tommy John surgery, but he's still a durable innings eater who throws his sinking fastball very fast.

From the Marlins' perspective, it makes sense to deal Alcantara away now. Still with two full seasons of club control, an acquiring team would be willing to give up a solid package to get his right arm in their rotation for a pair of seasons.

The team trading for Alcantara would want to feel OK about his medical reports, but if they do, it makes sense to bring in a guy who is reliable like this.

There's also likely a belief for at least some teams that they can get Alcantara back close to his dominant form of a few seasons ago.

If a contender were to add Alcantara and get him back to his old self, it'd end up looking like a steal no matter what they give up to Miami.
