Insider reveals major development in future of Sandy Alcantara with Marlins image

Major League Baseball insider Jim Bowden gave a major update on the future of Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara with the Miami Marlins.

Alcantara’s name has come up in trade rumors, but the right-hander has struggled this season. He’s 3-7 with a 7.14 ERA in 13 starts, and due to his performance, Bowden revealed Miami is unlikely to trade him.

“Don’t expect the Marlins to trade Sandy Alcantara (7.14 ERA over 13 starts) while his value is down,” Bowden wrote. “Instead, they’re expected to keep him until he regains his Cy Young Award form, which might not happen until later this year and maybe even next.

"They can always shop Alcantara, who is coming off Tommy John surgery, in the offseason or the next trade deadline. (His contract includes a $21 million team option for 2027.)”

Alcantara’s trade value is near the bottom right now, so Miami plans to hold onto him in hopes he improves and can look to trade him in the offseason. He's in the midst of his five-year, $56 million deal and can be a free agent in 2028 if Miami picks up his 2027 club option.

Alcantara missed the entire 2024 MLB season due to Tommy John surgery. Before going down with an injury, Alcantara was one of the best pitchers in baseball and has been the Marlins’ ace.

Alcantara is a two-time All-Star, and he won the NL Cy Young Award in 2022.
