Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani stat shows just how unique Japanese two-way superstar really is image

There's no one like Shohei Ohtani.

Of course, everyone knows that, inherently. But sometimes the stats of the Los Angeles Dodgers' two-way superstar make it all the more clear.

MLB.com's Sarah Langs wrote a new article this weekend, with the premise being players that can break records in 2025.

She included Ohtani's name on the list, but not because he has anyone to chase down.

Instead, Ohtani can just break his own records.

And when the only records you have to break are your own, that pretty much sums up how truly unique you are.

"There’s only one player in MLB history to have more than 15 home runs as a hitter and more than 30 strikeouts as a pitcher in a season: Ohtani, in 2018, ‘21, ‘22, ‘23 and ‘25," Langs writes. "With his projected 43 home runs and 136 strikeouts on the mound, he would have the third season in history with 40 and 100, joining his output in 2021 (46 home runs, 156 strikeouts) and 2023 (44, 167). No matter how you slice it, he’s one of one."

The only thing that has really stopped Ohtani at any point is health, like in 2024 when he only was the Dodgers' DH and didn't take the mound all year.

If he stays healthy, those benchmarks of 15 homers as a hitter and 30 strikeouts as a pitcher will be out of the way in no time.

By the midway point of the season, everyone will likely be wondering just how far Ohtani can go in all his historic pursuits this time around.
