The Los Angeles Dodgers are now on the path for one of the hardest accomplishments in sports: going for the three-peat. If they want to seal the deal, they need to make sure their team is in top order; right now, that means finding a real closer.
Deep down, Roki Sasaki is a starter, which is why he can’t continue in the role. MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds linked the Dodgers to a free agent All-Star closer whom they've pursued before: Devin Williams.
This could likely happen, as the Dodgers have been outright in their interest in Williams.
“Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes affirmed Tuesday that the Dodgers could sign a reliever as they ramp up for a potential three-peat. Candidates include at least one familiar target already clear at this week’s annual general managers’ meetings in Las Vegas, sources said: two-time All-Star reliever Devin Williams,” (via Fabian Ardaya).
This past season, Williams posted a 4.79 ERA, 90 Ks, a WHIP of 1.129, and 18 saves in 67 games. However, this could just be attributed to being an off year, as for his career, Williams has a 2.45 ERA, 465 Ks, a WHIP of 1.045, and 86 saves in 308 games.
This might be a smart move by the Dodgers. If they can buy low and get Williams on a bounce-back year, it would do wonders for them. Hopefully, they get to pursuing him ASAP, before other contenders realize this as well.
