The Los Angeles Dodgers are almost always mentioned whenever an elite player becomes even remotely available, and when it comes to Tarik Skubal, that wasn’t any different.
However, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the idea of the Detroit Tigers moving the ace before the season remains extremely unlikely, even if a team has a great trade offer out there.
Skubal has established himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball, and while his name has been in trade chatter, Feinsand made it clear that it’s unlikely that he’ll be dealt.
“Then, of course, there’s Tarik Skubal, though it remains the longest of long shots that the Tigers trade the two-time defending AL Cy Young Award winner before the season,” Feinsand wrote.
That reality effectively removes the Dodgers from the conversation, at least for now. Even with Los Angeles constantly looking for ways to upgrade its pitching staff, Detroit could think it has a chance to win the AL Central and go from there.
That doesn’t mean Skubal won’t be available, say, in June. If the Tigers play poorly later in the year, there wouldn’t be much of a reason to keep him around.
