The Kansas City Royals came away with an 8-4 win against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday afternoon, but one key name was missing from the lineup: Bobby Witt Jr.

Kansas City sits star shortstop as precaution after knee issue

Witt sat out the series finale after a brief injury scare the night before. During a plate appearance on Tuesday, the 25-year-old’s leg appeared to buckle slightly. Manager Matt Quatraro said postgame that Witt felt some discomfort in his knee but downplayed the severity, calling it “nothing.”

Still, the Royals didn’t take any chances. Witt was held out entirely on Wednesday as a precaution while Kansas City wrapped up the set at Wrigley Field.

The shortstop has been electric this season, slashing .288 with an .827 OPS through 102 games. He leads the league in doubles with 33 and has added 14 homers, 56 RBIs, and 27 steals, continuing to show why he’s one of the game’s most complete players.

Kansas City is hovering near .500 at 49–53. While they’re 11 games back in the division, the Royals remain just 4.5 games out of a Wild Card spot as the trade deadline approaches. The front office now faces a familiar question: push for October or start unloading assets?

Witt’s availability in the coming days could factor into that decision. For now, Kansas City will be hoping Wednesday’s rest keeps their star on the field when it matters most.
