The Detroit Tigers have faced one of the worst slides in the MLB this season, going from undisputed control of the AL Central to one game lead. If they somehow miss the playoffs, they’re going to need to take a hard look at their roster.
Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy believes they will, and thinks they could be a top contender for St. Louis Cardinals superstar Nolan Arenado.

“To preface, Arenado had a list of just a few teams he would approve a trade to before the 2025 season. Those teams reportedly were the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and the Houston Astros. Detroit wasn't on that initial list, but is 85-71 this season and third base has been a position of need for them. That's why the Tigers pursued Alex Bregman and there's buzz about that fit again as well. If the Tigers are actually looking for a third baseman, Arenado is the type of veteran to bring into the mix to take a contender to an even higher level,” McAvoy wrote.
Right now, the Tigers are playing Zach McKinstry at third, who had an All-Star year this season, slashing .260/.335/.442/.777 with 12 homers and 49 RBI. Arenado had a bit worse line, hitting .236/.292/.365/.656 with 10 homers and 49 RBI.
Like McAvoy wrote, Arenado could be the veteran leader the Tigers need. Also, while his hitting declined a bit, his defensive magic is very much there. They could move McKinstry, and have Arenado take third.
Hopefully they look into Arenado, as he could be the veteran that finally puts them over the top.
