Tigers linked to $116.5 million three-time All-Star as possible upgrade from Gleyber Torres in blockbuster trade image

The Detroit Tigers had one of the worst collapses in recent history, barely limping into the playoffs after having a 15-game lead in the AL Central. The Tigers need to take a long look at their roster, and decide where they need to upgrade this offseason.

Fansided’s Robert Murray has a possible upgrade, in Arizona Diamondbacks three-time All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte.

“With this Detroit Tigers collapse, if they are eliminated from the postseason early, they are going to need a spark. They are not going to fire Scott Harris. They are not going to fire AJ Hinch. But they should go all in and trade for Marte. Do I expect Marte to get traded? It’s unlikely. But it’s definitely possible. Detroit had room to go out and get Alex Bregman last winter and were the runners up. Why not get Marte, who is signed to a very team-friendly deal, and go all-in on a season that could very well be Tarik Skubal’s last in Detroit? It would be very smart. And I think they should do it,” Murray wrote.

This season, Marte slashed .283/.376/.512/.888 with 28 doubles, 27 home runs, and 71 RBI in 125 games played. Gleyber Torres, who hits .256/.358/.387/.745 with 22 doubles, 16 homers, and 74 RBI in 145 games.

If the Tigers wanted to keep both players, they would have to move one of Torres or Marte to one of their secondary positions. Or, they could put Torres in the deal for Marte, or make another deal with another team for Torres to open up the spot for Marte.

Hopefully, the Tigers go for the first option, as both are qualified hitters, and that’s something the Tigers need after a failing offense in September.
