Free agent starting pitcher Michael King

One of the more intriguing free agents on the starting pitcher market is right-hander Michael King.

King is two full seasons into his conversion from a reliever to a starter, and it has gone quite well so far. King has posted a sub-3.50 ERA each of the last two seasons and because of that, he is drawing major interest around the league.

Another team was added to the list of those interested Wednesday, as Detroit Tigers beat writer Evan Petzold reported that Detroit is interested in King, as well as reliever Pete Fairbanks.

King is coming off an injury riddled season that forced him to mess nearly half of his expected starts, so his health will be the No. 1 priority before a team signs him. For the Tigers, the addition of King to their starting rotation would be welcome and very much needed.

Outside of back-to-back Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, the Detroit starting rotation struggled last season. Despite having the Cy Young winner, the staff ranked 10th in Wins Above Average last season.

Being able to secure King from free agency and add him to a staff with the dominant Skubal and the up-and-coming Casey Mize would likely cement Detroit as the team to beat atop the American League Central headed into the 2026 season.
