The Detroit Tigers are heading into an important offseason. One of the biggest dominoes to fall was the decision from second baseman Gleyber Torres.
After the Tigers gave Torres the qualifying offer, at $22.025 million for one year, Torres had a big decision to make.
Shortly before the deadline, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Tigers' second baseman has accepted the qualifying offer.
Tigers' Gleyber Torres accepts $22.025 million qualifying offer
Torres is accepting the Tigers' qualifying offer, coming back to Detroit for another season in 2026. After a successful stint in Detroit, Torres decided against testing the free agent market.
What this decision likely means is that Torres didn't get any indication he could ink a multi-year extension this winter. Instead of trying further for a multi-year offer, Torres has decided to come back to Detroit for one more season.
The soon-to-be 29-year-old will be heading into his second season with the Tigers, and this time, rather than his $15 million contract in 2024, he's earned a $7.025 million pay raise.

In 2025, Torres played in 145 games for Detroit, being named an All-Star for the first time since 2019. He hit.256 with a.745 OPS with 136 hits, 79 runs scored, 22 doubles, 16 home runs, 74 RBIs, 85 walks, and 101 strikeouts.
He was off to a very strong start to begin the year, and like most of the Tigers' roster, struggled in the second half.
Torres will now look to have a more consistent and strong 2026 season before hitting free agency again. He won't have the qualifying offer attached to him next offseason, making him a slightly more desirable free agent target if he can have a strong 2026 season.
