Second baseman Gleyber Torres is returning to the Detroit Tigers in 2026.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported on Tuesday that Torres had accepted the $22.05 million qualifying offer from the Tigers.

That is good news for the Tigers, particularly if Torres' play in 2026 resembles what he did before the All-Star break in 2025. Torres finished 2025 with 16 home runs, 74 RBI and a.256/.358/.387 slash line.

The 2025 season was Torres' first in Detroit. He'd previously spent his entire MLB career with the New York Yankees. He helped the Tigers make the playoffs for a second straight season, though not without a late-season scare. For most of the season, Detroit had (or was close to having) MLB's best record and appeared a lock to win the American League Central. But a 7-17 September put the postseason in doubt for the Tigers. Ultimately, they earned a Wild Card spot and defeated the Cleveland Guardians in the Wild Card Series before falling 3-2 to the Seattle Mariners in the ALDS.

In many ways, Torres' season mirrored his team's.

Torres had a strong first half, slashing.281/.387/.425 with nine home runs and 45 RBI. Those numbers helped make Torres the starting second baseman for the American League at the 2025 All-Star Game.

But as was the case with the Tigers, Torres struggled after the break. In the second half of the season, he slashed.227/.336/.327 with seven home runs and 30 RBI.
