Rockies' GM reveals offseason spending plans image

The Colorado Rockies have had a uneventful offseason to this point, making plenty of minor transactions.

The team released Michael Toglia, signed Drew Avans and eight-year veteran reliever John Brebbia to minor league contracts.

That said, a notable transaction could soon be on the horizon for Colorado, as the team continues to rebuild in the incredibly difficult National League West.

General manager Josh Byrnes recently spoke to MLB insider Thomas Harding about the Rockies' next moves. “We’ve played out scenarios where we would attempt to bring in two guys who can stabilize that area (rotation) — who can not only pitch well but know how to give us some bulk innings, which any team needs,” Byrnes said. “That’s probably how we’re trying to map it out. There is a lot of unknown with what pops up in trades or free agency, but we need to add in that area.”

Although this may not be what Rockies fans want to hear, veteran starters offer cost-effective contracts. The team could turn these into trade assets at the deadline, shopping them to contending teams, looking to bolster their roster ahead of a deep playoff run.

Veteran options that the Rockies could consider include: Patrick Corbin, Jose Quintana, Wade Miley, Martin Perez, Alex Cobb and Miles Mikolas to name a few.

Currently, the Rockies are expected to have spots in the rotation filled by Kyle Freeland and Ryan Feltner, however spots beyond that seem to be up for grabs, especially if German Marquez departs in free agency.

As free agency continues, expect the Rockies to keep their free agent spending to a minimum.
