The Colorado Rockies aren't one of the Major League's biggest spenders, but they have been adding a few quality veterans this winter.
Michael Lorenzen joins the rotation, and potentially the lineup, as a solid option in free agency, while Jake McCarthy is a nice trade addition from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Their next move, according to ESPN's Jorge Castillo, is a nice addition in the form of a utilityman in former Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins All-Star Willi Castro, who is signing a two-year deal with the Rockies.
Rockies to sign ex-Cubs, Twins All-Star utilityman to 2-year deal
"The Rockies and utilityman Willi Castro are in agreement on a two-year deal, sources tell ESPN," Castillo reported.
This signing from the Rockies is a nice one. While Castro might not be the best free agent this winter, he was one of the more interesting options available.
Castro played in 120 games in 2025 for the Twins and Cubs, recording 0.3 bWAR with the Twins in 86 games before he was dealt to the Cubs, where he put up -0.5 bWAR in 34 games.
In 2024, during his All-Star season, Castro played in 158 games, recording 1.6 bWAR with a.247 batting average, a.717 OPS, and a 102 OPS+. The year prior, Castro had a 105 OPS+ with a.750 OPS and 2.6 bWAR.

Castro's not the best hitter, but his bat, combined with some stolen base ability and incredible defensive versatility, makes him a valuable option.
In 2025, Castro played six games in center field, five games at shortstop, 23 games at third base, 44 games in right field, 39 games in left field, and 48 games at second base.
His versatility, including in the middle of games for defensive substitutions, makes him a valuable chess piece that can be moved around the diamond for the best lineup and defensive construction possible.
This is a nice addition for the Rockies, and he should help the team field a better roster in 2026 than they did in 2025.
