The Cleveland Guardians were able to lock in a franchise icon likely for the rest of his Hall of Fame MLB career. Jose Ramirez and the Guardians agreed to a $175 million extension through 2032, which will keep him with the team for the rest of his career.
It's a great signing for both the Guardians and their fans. Having an icon like Ramirez on the roster for so long is not common in today's MLB. But Ramirez is taking a bit less than he could get on the open market to stay with the Guardians.
But, there's a bit more to this deal than the $175 million. According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Guardians have added a few interesting additions to Ramirez's new seven-year contract.
Jose Ramirez's Guardians deal has some interesting additions
Heyman reveals that Ramirez has the following included in his $175 million extension: "1 round trip private air travel per year; 1 round triple private air travel All-Star. Max $200K per trip. Additional hotel room on road."
Ramirez will be getting a full no-trade clause in his deal, along with having $10 million of his deal deferred without interest to go with upwards of $500K MVP incentive.
But the eye-catching contract additions are the hotel room on the road and the $200,000 in private air travel expenses per year.
For starters, the air travel voucher he can use once per year is very interesting. He can take a private flight worth up to $200K every year, and seemingly, an extra one if he makes the All-Star team.

Not that Ramirez will be hurting for money with this $175 million deal, but this addition does give Ramirez, and likely others, the ability to fly wherever he wants once per year.
While that's a unique addition, the more interesting contract note is the additional hotel room on the road. He already has one himself, but now, he will get an extra room every time he goes on the road.
It's a fascinating inclusion, and one that will be interesting to hear about why he included it in his new deal. Of course, he might not ever reveal the reason for the extra hotel room, but it is an interesting addition in this contract.
Ramirez is beloved in Cleveland, and this deal is incredibly cheap compared to what he could land if he were to hit the open market. But, he loves it in Cleveland, and this deal is evident that the Guardians are the only team Ramirez wants to play for in his career.
