Guardians sign catcher who was once a top prospect but now continues quiet offseason news image

The Cleveland Guardians could use some more hitters.

Apparently no one told the Guardians this.

They've spent a bit of money this offseason to add to their pitching depth, but the lineup is looking just about the same as it did to end last season, when it was pretty much Jose Ramirez, Steven Kwan and then a lot of hoping and praying.

The Guardians did sign a hitter on Wednesday, but he won't excite anyone. It's just Dom Nunez, who was a depth catcher with Cleveland last season, too. Guards Insider reported the deal, which is a minor league contract with an invite to big league spring training.

Nunez was once a top prospect in the Colorado Rockies' system, but that was a long time ago. His bat has never hit well enough at the upper levels and into the majors to be an impact player.

Teams across baseball are always searching for more catching depth, but something will have gone wrong for the Guardians if Nunez is playing in key spots for them this season.

Bo Naylor will retain his starting role after a hot finish to the season.

Austin Hedges remains as a sound defender and great clubhouse presence.

The Guardians also expect David Fry to catch again in 2026 after an arm injury limited him to DH duty in 2025.

There's still a couple months for the Guardians to add to their lineup, particularly in the outfield. But as more time passes, it seems less and less likely.

Cleveland fans will just have to hope their squad of overachievers can do it again.
