The Cincinnati Reds released a pitcher with some MLB experience last week, but now he's coming back.
Cincy announced that they've re-signed right-handed pitcher Carson Spiers.
Spiers is working his way back from elbow surgery in July and likely won't get back until midway through the upcoming season at best.
The Reds non-tendered Spiers last week ahead of MLB's Friday deadline. But now they've got him back on a minor league contract with an invite to MLB camp.
Spiers is 28 years old and has pitched at the MLB level in each of the past three seasons.
He has a career 5.69 ERA at the MLB level in 117 innings.
In his minor league career, Spiers has a better but not great 4.08 ERA.
Spiers throws a 92 mile per hour fastball, so he can't afford to lose too much velocity coming off of his elbow injury.
The Reds evidently like Spiers enough to bring him back, and Spiers feels comfortable enough to stick with the organization for his injury rehab.
After Spiers gets healthy, he'll likely have to prove himself at Triple-A before he gets another chance at the MLB level.
