Chase Burns arrived as advertised.

The Cincinnati Reds chose him No. 2 overall in the 2024 MLB Draft. And about a year later, he was on the mound in Cincinnati, making his MLB debut against the New York Yankees.

Here are the results of the first six batters Burns faced:

  • Strikeout
  • Strikeout
  • Strikeout
  • Strikeout
  • Strikeout
  • Strikeout

Yep, Burns struck out the first six guys he faced to begin his MLB career.

The Yankees eventually got three runs off of Burns, but not before he showed how special he is.

In the process of six up, six down via the strikeout, Burns made MLB history.

The last time a pitcher struck out six consecutive batters to start an MLB career was in 1962, according to Sarah Langs. That occasion was Pete Richert in relief, actually against the Reds.

Burns is the first starter to accomplish the feat in the expansion era (since 1961).

His fastball got above 100, and everything he threw was working.

It's exactly what Reds fans wanted to see, and it validated the decision to call Burns up after just two Triple-A starts.

Burns isn't a prospect anymore. He's the real deal.
