The Chicago Cubs made a major free-agent splash when they signed Alex Bregman to a massive five-year, $175 million contract.
With no opt-outs and a full no-trade clause, the former Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox slugger is now locked into the Cubs for the next five years.
But, after such a great signing, what's next for the Cubs? ESPN's Jesse Rogers shared that Cubs executive Jed Hoyer revealed the team's plans going forward following the blockbuster Bregman signing.
Jed Hoyer reveals what's next after Bregman deal
"By no means are we done with the offseason," Hoyer said. "But we did check some of the big boxes."
The Cubs added some help to the rotation, and with Bregman's addition, they vastly improved the offense and the infield.
But, after that, the Cubs are planning to go after depth additions, Hoyer revealed. This makes a lot of sense, even if it's not the flashiest moves possible.
Adding Bregman is a massive move, and recently, they've added depth players like Justin Dean and Corbin Martin. Edward Cabrera joined the rotation in a major move, while players like Caleb Thielbar, Hoby Milner, and Phil Maton were added to the bullpen.

The Cubs' offseason has been a great one, with plenty of improvements all throughout the roster. Shota Imanaga is also back, and as long as they get some injury luck, the Cubs could be very serious World Series contenders in 2026.
Next on the list for Hoyer and the Cubs are some smaller additions, with the depth in the outfield likely being one area the team will target this winter.
But, overall, it's been a very productive offseason, and not many other roster moves likely need to be made to be a contender in 2026. Hoyer has done great work, as he now pivots to depth moves this winter.
