Cubs sign former 1st-round pick to free agent contract to add pitching depth image

The Chicago Cubs signed a pitcher Monday who once was viewed as a top prospect but now is a total flier.

The pitcher: Tyler Beede.

Beede's signing was reported by Ari Alexander, and it's a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

He entered pro baseball back in the 2014 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt as the No. 14 overall pick by the San Francisco Giants. He had actually been a first-round pick in 2011 by the Blue Jays, too, but had not signed and instead went to school.

He made his MLB debut in 2018 and spent portions of four seasons at the big league level with the Giants.

He then pitched in a partial season with the Pirates, went to Japan in 2023, then pitched for the Guardians in 2024.

Beede didn't pitch in the majors at all in 2025.

His career MLB ERA is 5.55 with an 8.1 strikeouts per nine innings ratio.

Beede is 32 years old and spent the 2025 season in a few different places.

He began in Triple-A with St. Paul (Twins organization) and had an 8.00 ERA in seven outings.

He then pitched for Long Island in the independent Atlantic League and had a 5.48 ERA in five starts.

From there, he went to the Mexican League and had a 7.43 ERA in three starts.

So it's not obvious Beede still has anything left in the tank, but the Cubs are giving him a shot.
