The Chicago Cubs are on the verge of making a trade that would bring in one of the brightest arms in all of MLB. Pending physicals and medical reviews, the Cubs are set to acquire Edward Cabrera.
“Cubs closing in on Marlins pitcher Edward Cabrera as they review medicals. Trade likely not to involve top tier pitching prospects going back, sources tell ESPN. Position player prospects likely to go. Michael Cerami was first on trade being close,” ESPN insider Jesse Rogers reported.
The Cubs are still looking to upgrade other positions, and Sports Illustrated’s Will Laws believes they will now be all in on Bo Bichette.
“Bichette re-established his value after a disastrous 2024 season in which injuries cost him 81 games and most of his productivity. Before the 2025 playoffs, he had never played any position other than shortstop at the major league level, but perhaps it’s time for a permanent move to second base after years of ranking near the bottom in most defensive metrics at shortstop. Bichette’s contact-heavy approach should enable him to age gracefully, and the fact that he’s hitting the open market on the right side of 30 should ensure a big payday,” Laws wrote.
If the Cubs can sign Bichette, it would be a huge boost for Chicago. The team may be viewing him as a second or third baseman.
“Can confirm Bo Bichette has received interest from multiple teams who view him as a second baseman or third baseman, due to the presence of an established shortstop on those rosters. Further evidence that the World Series augmented his value in the marketplace,” MLB insider Jon Morosi posted.
If the Cubs can pull off back-to-back major moves, it would make for an exciting offseason, even if they don’t make many other transactions. Adding Bichette would solidify the infield and give the team a strong foundation.
Chicago is aiming to make noise in the playoffs next season, and moves like these would give fans plenty to be excited about. The city will surely be buzzing if the Cubs can make this happen.
