The Chicago Cubs are set to have a big loss this offseason, as it seems they might not be paying their superstar, Kyle Tucker, the money he’s projected to make. They’ll need to find a replacement, and luckily for them, this year’s free agency class is loaded.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand believes the Cubs will find their replacement in Boston Red Sox superstar Alex Bregman, who opted out of his contract with Boston to test free agency.
“The Cubs were in on Bregman last winter, offering him a four-year deal worth $130 million before he signed with Boston. Third base doesn’t seem to be a glaring need after Matt Shaw’s second-half improvement (11 HR,.839 OPS in 63 games after the break) and his strong defense (he was a Gold Glove Award finalist), but with Kyle Tucker potentially headed elsewhere, the Cubs should have some money to spend and could get creative,” Feinsand wrote.
This past season, Bregman slashed.273/.360/.462/.821 with 28 doubles, 18 home runs, and 62 RBI in 114 games. While his numbers were low this season, he’s proven in the past to be a great hitter, and the intangibles he brings are second-to-none.
Bregman would fit in well with Chicago, either at third base, second, or even DH. If the Cubs really want a clubhouse leader to change the vibes of a season, Bregman’s their man.
Hopefully, the Cubs get on pursuing him soon, as other contenders would love to have Bregman. Plus, Boston has a major advantage already, as he loves the city.
