The Chicago Cubs made a massive free agent splash this winter, during the Chicago Bears' Wild Card game, as they signed third baseman Alex Bregman to a free agent deal.
Chicago now has a new third baseman, and they finally landed Bregman to join the roster on a massive new deal.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Bregman's deal with the Cubs is for five years at a whopping $175 million total, good for $35 million per season.
Alex Bregman's contract details with Cubs feature $175 million, five years, no opt-outs
"Third baseman Alex Bregman and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a five-year, $175 million contract, sources tell ESPN." Passan reports.
This is a huge contract for the Cubs to hand out, as the former Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros third baseman is coming to Chicago.
$175 million over five years is no small number, as he's now making $35 million per season. Compared to his previous deal with the Red Sox, which was for $40 million per year, it's a cheaper AAV deal, but it's a lot more money for the All-Star third baseman.
But for Cubs fans, things are even better. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Bregman's contract has no opt-outs, which is a significant deal for the Cubs.

Instead of the risk of losing Bregman over these next five seasons, the veteran third baseman is locked into the Cubs' roster.
There is a no-trade clause in the deal, but for the Cubs, that's more than worth it to bring Bregman to Chicago on a long-term deal to be their new third baseman.
Matt Shaw is now set to move to second base, while Nico Hoerner could be on his way out in a trade this winter.
The Cubs made a major splash this offseason, signing one of the top remaining free agents to a huge $175 million, five-year deal with a no-trade clause and no opt-outs.
