The Boston Red Sox have missed on another huge free agent target they were interested in, as Pete Alonso signs with their division rival, the Baltimore Orioles. If they want to avoid what they’ve been doing for the past few offseasons, they need to make a big move, fast.
Here are some moves they can, and SHOULD make.
Re-Sign 3B Alex Bregman.
This should honestly be at the top of their list. By re-signing Bregman, they retain their leader, who contributed so many intangibles that gave the Sox their first playoff appearance since 2021. He’s also one of the few righty sluggers left on the market, and with a lefty-dominated lineup, they NEED him.

Trade for 2B Ketel Marte.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have made it known Marte is being shopped, albeit for a high price. He could be quite worth it, though, as he slashed.283/.376/.517/.893 with 28 home runs, and 72 RBI last season. On top of that, he’s slated to make around $19 million per season on his contract that runs through 2030 with a $11.5 million player option in 2031. If the Sox can get him without giving up top prospects Connelly Early, Payton Tolle, or Marcelo Mayer, it should be a no-brainer.
Sign SS Bo Bichette
This is their final option, and of the three, may be the most unlikely. This is due to the fact his market is apparently not to the liking of Boston. However, he may be the best fit. He’s 26 years old, putting him on the same timeline as the rest of the roster. He could slot into second base, or third if the Sox don’t bring back Bregman. Plus, he’s shown he is a playoff hero, which the Sox desperately need.
Hopefully, the Sox make a move soon. If they want to keep the trust of the fans, which has been hanging on by a thread due to the success of last season, they need to make at least two of these moves.
