The Boston Red Sox have had a busy offseason, swinging trades to acquire pitching and infielder talent.

One of the best additions for the Red Sox wasn't a trade, but their signing of Ranger Suarez to a $130 million deal. He's not officially been signed just yet, as the Red Sox still needed to clear a 40-man roster spot to bring in the veteran left-hander.

And according to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Red Sox are doing just that.

They've reportedly made a trade with the Minnesota Twins, sending Tristan Gray (on the 40-man roster) to the Twins for a catching prospect, clearing space for Suarez.

Red Sox swing minor trade with Twins for catcher

"Small overnight trade: The Boston Red Sox are acquiring catching prospect Nate Baez from the Minnesota Twins for utilityman Tristan Gray, sources tell ESPN," Passan reports.

Gray is a 29-year-old infielder who spent 2025 with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago White Sox's Triple-A affiliate. He played in 30 games in Tampa Bay, hitting.231 with a.693 OPS. In Triple-A, he had a.270 average with an. 805 OPS.

He's not a huge piece of the roster for the Red Sox and was the odd man out to make room for Suarez on the Major League roster.

But they aren't simply cutting him; they traded him to the Twins to acquire Baez, a catching prospect.

The 24-year-old Baez was drafted in the 12th round by the Twins in 2022 and will change organizations for the first time in his career. He had a.794 OPS in 338 at-bats this past season, and in his minor league career, he has a.788 OPS with 25 home runs and 115 RBIS in 782 at-bats across 229 games played.

The veteran left-hander will join the team and round out one of the best rotations in baseball.
