The Boston Red Sox have finally been getting their money’s worth from Trevor Story, who’s been tearing it up this season, and been one of the better shortstops in the MLB. However, some people still don’t see the hype.
One of those is Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, who ranked all the shortstops in the MLB, and put Story at No. 17.
“Story played in 163 total games over the first three seasons of his six-year, $140 million deal with the Red Sox, but he is finally healthy and has already recorded the fourth 20/20 season of his career. His .307 on-base percentage leaves a lot to be desired, but it looks like Boston will at least be able to squeeze some value out of the back end of his contract,” Reuter wrote.
Reuter does have a point for Story’s playing time, as he was basically being paid to sit in the dugout for the first three seasons in Boston. However, he’s making it all up this year, as he’s breaking records and leading the MLB in some categories.
This season, Story has the most game-winning RBI in the MLB, and he’s in the top six for the Red Sox in a single season since 1974. Story is also only two homers and 12 RBI away from being the second Red Sox to have 25+ homers, 25+ steals, and 100+ RBI in a single season, since Jacoby Ellsbury in 2011.
So while Story may not be a top five shortstop in today’s game, he’s definitely not middle of the pack. Hopefully he proves that down the stretch, as the Sox have a chance to make a deep playoff run.
