The Boston Red Sox have made some decent moves this offseason, but haven’t really made the splash fans have hoped for. However, they may be able to during the Winter Meetings.
According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, five-time All-Star slugger Pete Alonso will meet with suitors during the Winter Meetings, with the Sox and Baltimore Orioles being named dropped.
“Pete Alonso’s residence in Tampa has turned these Winter Meetings into something of a home game for the free-agent slugger. To that end, Alonso will take the 90-minute drive to central Florida on Tuesday, according to sources, to meet in person with interested suitors that include the Red Sox and Orioles,” Puma wrote.
This past season, Alonso slashed.272/.347/.524/.871 with 41 doubles, 38 home runs, and 126 RBI in 162 games played. He would easily become the home run and RBI leader of the team, and would turn Boston’s offense from good to great.
If the Sox could land Alonso, it would be the first step toward building a championship team. They still need to re-sign Alex Bregman and find a real No. 2 pitcher to pair with Garrett Crochet.
Hopefully, the Sox’ talks with Alonso’s camp go well, and they sign him to a long-term deal that puts them in the driver’s seat of the AL East.
